Finca Las Ranas

Mecacalco, Altotonga, Veracruz, Mexico

Finca Las Ranas is a specialty-coffee farm in Mecacalco, Altotonga, in the central mountains of Veracruz, at 1,450 meters above sea level. The farm is run by Isabel Hernández — a fourth-generation coffee producer from the Sierra de Mecacalco — alongside her husband Victor Manuel Carlos.

The farm takes its name from the endemic green tree frog — the calate — that appears in the coffee plots during the rainy season. Caring for the frogs shapes the farm's practices: no pesticides, nematicides, herbicides, or fungicides are used on the plots.

Harvest & community

About 90% of the harvest is carried out by women, making coffee the primary source of income for the rural community surrounding the farm.

Variety & process

The farm grows Marsellesa and works with washed and honey processes, including pink and purple honey lots.

Recognition

In 2024, Finca Las Ranas was named one of 11 finalists of the Premio Café Veracruz.
