Home AeroPress recipe: a short guide (→ TOLO shop)

Why AeroPress fits at home
The AeroPress is an immersion brewer with manual pressure: compact, fast, and easy to clean. This note is a home base recipe — not a product shelf. If you want to buy the brewer or whole beans, that lives in the TOLO shop.
What you need
- AeroPress (chamber, plunger, filter cap) — see the AeroPress coffee maker page.
- Paper filters (or a metal filter if you already own one).
- Fresh whole-bean coffee and a grinder. Freshness logic is in our specialty whole-bean buying guide.
- Hot water and a scale if you have one (makes the cup repeatable).
Base recipe (standard method)
Follow the brand’s standard method: filter in the cap, coffee in the chamber, water, stir, and press calmly. The official AeroPress guide is the source of truth for parts and steps.
A useful home starting point:
- Dose: ~15–17 g coffee for ~220–250 ml water (tune to taste).
- Grind: medium-fine (finer than classic V60, coarser than espresso). If the cup is bitter or the press is hard, open the grind a notch — see grind science.
- Water: about 85–92 °C (no need for a full rolling boil). We cover temperature in perfect water temperature for brewing.
- Time: ~1:00–1:30 total contact (pour + short rest + press). Press in 20–30 s without forcing the plunger.
To compare immersion vs drip vs espresso without mixing money URLs, go back to our V60 / Chemex / AeroPress / espresso comparison.
Water: the variable people skip
If the cup tastes flat or harsh even when the recipe is clean, check the water. The Specialty Coffee Association publishes brewing water quality standards (mineralization and recommended ranges) — see the SCA Coffee Standards. Very soft or very hard water changes extraction more than an extra second of press.
Quick dial-ins
- Sour / sharp: grind a bit finer, nudge temperature up, or add 15–20 s contact.
- Bitter / drying: grind coarser, lower temperature, or shorten time.
- Weak: raise dose or reduce water — don’t just press harder.
Where to buy at TOLO
The AeroPress coffee maker and paper filters live in the shop, next to whole beans. Money queries (brewer, beans, gear) resolve on /shop, not the blog.
In Toluca, pick up at TOLO Pino Suárez on Blvd. José María Pino Suárez, Col. Cuauhtémoc, 50130. Hours: Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Phone: +52 56 2915 1741. That is the only open café. Cristóbal Colón is coming soon, not open.
How to use this note
