Orea O1 recipe at home (1:18)

Looking for an Orea O1 recipe? Our house pour-over on the flat-bottom Orea O1 uses a 1:18 ratio (20 g / 360 g), a 60 g bloom, and three even pours at 93 °C. The step-by-step also lives under How to brew — Orea O1; this note explains why the flat bed behaves the way it does and how to dial it in at home.

What you need

  • Orea O1 dripper and flat-bottom paper filters — we carry the Orea O1 in the shop.
  • 20 g medium-ground specialty coffee (600–800 µm).
  • 360 g water at 93 °C, gooseneck kettle, and a scale.

The 1:18 house recipe

  • Rinse the paper filter with hot water to remove papery taste and preheat the Orea; discard the rinse water.
  • Add 20 g medium-ground coffee, level the bed, and tare the scale.
  • Bloom: pour 60 g of water at 93 °C and gently saturate all the grounds.
  • Once the bloom has drained, pour in slow spirals up to 160 g.
  • When that pour has drained, add water up to 260 g.
  • When it drains again, add water up to 360 g and let it draw down fully — the flat bed drains evenly.

Why flat-bottom extraction is forgiving

A flat coffee bed keeps depth more even from edge to center than a steep cone, so flow is less dependent on a perfect pour. For the cone-vs-flat trade-offs (Orea, Kalita Wave, V60), see our flat-bottom vs cone dripper guide. Water chemistry still matters: the SCA Coffee Standards summarize target ranges for brewing water, and World Coffee Research publishes origin and quality research we use when talking about green coffee.

Dialing grind and pour

  • Grind: start medium (600–800 µm). If the cup tastes thin or sour, grind a notch finer; if it tastes harsh or muddy, go coarser. Particle-size basics are in The science of grinding.
  • Pour: slow spirals, no aggressive agitation. The Orea’s flat bed rewards even saturation over height or swirl tricks.
  • Water: at Toluca altitude water boils near 91 °C, so use it freshly off the boil for this 93 °C target, or see perfect water temperature for coffee.
